artist statement
I see things I want to paint wherever I am. I primarily paint the landscape taking cues from urban and rural settings, without really understanding what it is about a particular place that prompts me to stop and take notice. This is part of my motivation to explore a subject in paint. Certain arrangements of light, shadow, color and structure evoke a response in me. My job as a painter is to capture the essence of that response and instill a similar experience in the viewer of the painting.

Increasingly my work is influenced by time spent painting outdoors where the elements constantly shift, the landscape is ephemeral, and time is constrained. The focus is intensified and the subject must be edited down to essentials. My goal is to translate the economy of that outdoor experience into my studio work.
